Despite its mountainous location, Liechtenstein enjoys a relatively mild climate thanks to the influence of a warm down-slope wind known as the "Föhn". The Föhn plays a major role in shaping the climate in the Rhine Valley, where the influence of the warm wind leads to a longer growing period in spring and autumn. Indeed, even in winter temperatures of up to 15°C are regularly recorded.

The Alps in Vorarlberg and Switzerland shield Liechtenstein from cold air arriving from the Atlantic and polar regions, creating a protected haven found in many similar mountainous regions. This means that the principality has a large number of moist, fertile 'litter meadows' as well as a long fruit-growing and wine-making tradition.

Liechtenstein's small surface area has little influence on differences in climate. Of much greater importance, however, is the presence of many different altitude levels within the country. These lead to a situation in which temperatures can fall below -15°C in winter but often vary between 20 and 28°C in summer. On hot days temperatures can even reach 36°C.

Annual precipitation levels are between 900 and 1200 millimetres, with up to 1900 millmetres falling in Alpine areas. Liechtenstein enjoys an average of 1600 hours of sunshine a year.
